INVERTED ASANAS
What happens when a person inverts himself? You guessed right, the whole world turns upside down, which is an unusual position for us to be in. In the same way, when we assume a head stand or a shoulder stand pose, our body gets to experience an unusually healthy position, provided that the practice is done under expert guidance.
In contrast to the usual gravitational pull from head to toe, the gravitational pull in an inverted position is from the toes towards the head. Every movement that happens inside of the body is pulled the other way round. As a result, it changes the conventional functions of the internal organs, and helps to clean the body.
The trunk of the body is like a bag full of internal organs that are wrapped in thin pouches made of muscles. Visualize what happens when the bag is turned upside down. The pouches that are usually at the bottom of the bag will now be at the top, and vice versa, all of the pouches will be experiencing a new and different level of pressure. Now, imagine that the human lungs are the two pouches at the bottom of the inverted bag. When a person in this position tries to breathe out, there will be maximum exhalation due to the extra pressure of the abdomen pressing on the diaphragm. In this course, each and every bronchiole (little chambers) inside of the lungs will be emptied. Also, the resulting increase in blood pressure in the lungs will completely wash out the stagnant air and blood from the lungs, detoxifying and revitalizing the whole cardio-vascular system. This group of asanas is not suitable for people with heart conditions. Be very cautious of the effects of these postures, and seek expert guidance before attempting any practice.
These practices are traditionally used as an important constituent for higher spiritualsadhana of kundalini awakening. These practices are very powerful and should only be performed under expert guidance, and the following key points should be strictly adhered to in order to avoid any unwanted accidents or injuries.
